Virginia’s Computer Science standards become a requirement in fall 2019 - Not sure where to get started?
CodeVA's Director of Education Rebecca Dovi covers the new
Virginia Computer Science SOLs. The session defines computer science and gives insight into the structure of the standards. Free resources and tools will be shared along with an overview of training available to all Virginia teachers.
Many people are surprised to discover computer science is more than just coding. It is the study of how we use computing devices to solve human problems and the new Computer Science SOLs include Networking and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Cybersecurity, Impacts of Computing, Computing Systems, and Algorithms and Programming. While this may feel overwhelming CodeVA has learned Virginia’s teachers are up to the challenge through the trainings they’ve conducted since 2014.
In 2016 Virginia became the first state in the country to mandate computer science be incorporated into instruction for all students. In fall 2017 the state Board of Education passed the new Computer Science SOLs and in spring of 2018 the VDOE set the expectation that school begin implementing by fall of 2019.
CodeVA is a Statewide nonprofit with the mission of supporting Computer Science Education for all Virginia teachers and students. Since 2014 CodeVA has trained teachers from elementary to high school in computer science education all across the Digital Dominion.
