Learning to Swim: Building a Student Tech Team with a Laptop Lending Library

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Not all students have their own devices, so we can't depend on a BYOD program if we want students working consistently with technology. However, not all schools can afford to provide a device for every student. We need to find alternatives. Fortunately, a generous company gave us their old, wiped laptops when they upgraded. YEAH! Our district won't add donated devices to their management system. BOOO!

BUT, we also should be teaching our students to troubleshoot their devices. This gave us an excellent opportunity to create a student tech team that could troubleshoot problems, because they understood how the computers worked. Now we have 45 laptops for students to check out: some with specialized programs for math, science or substitutes, others with just the basics, all with protection to ensure that student information is wiped between each user. We also have a set of students with the skills to help their teachers and colleagues in class.

Learn from our experience how to set up a successful laptop lending library from scratch, along with a student tech team to keep them in good repair.
