Making the 5 Cs Come Alive in an Elementary Makerspace

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Makerspaces offer students authentic opportunities for critical thinking, creative thinking, collaboration, communication, and citizenship - key competencies outlined in the Profile of a Virginia Graduate. This session is based on the premise that these competencies must be taught to all students beginning in kindergarten. It follows the journey of one elementary school through the creation and implementation of an Elementary Makerspace that includes opportunities for students to interact with tools for engineering, manufacturing, coding, programming robotics, 3-D printing, producing movies, exploring electricity, and deconstructing objects. Attention will be given to the factors that are critical in the creation of a Makerspace including the designation of physical space, funding, and the selection of materials. The session also will examine factors that contribute to successful implementation of a Makerspace including scheduling, staff training, opportunities for special education inclusion, student choice, and the creation of curricular connections. Participants will leave will this session equipped to create a Makerspace that will allow all students to explore, design, and innovate while developing their capacity to demonstrate the 5 Cs.
