Classroom Clickbait - Tapping into Student Curiosity
Have you been lured by clickbait before? It's those Internet ads you can't help clicking on because the images or words spark your curiosity. Wouldn't it be great if you could get your students to do that with learning? In this session we will explore five techniques from the clickbait pros that you can use tomorrow in your classroom to grab students' interest and make them WANT to engage in learning. You won't believe technique #5! (See what I did there)? We will show several examples of each strategy; share how we have used them in real lessons; and explore online tools for harnessing the power of classroom clickbait. All our presentations can be found on this site.

Coding the World: An Introduction to Coding for Girls
Technology is changing everything about the way we live and work. Computing skills are the most sought-after in the US job market, with demand growing 3X the national average — but girls across the US are being left behind. Today, less than a quarter of computing jobs are held by women, and that number is declining. Girls Who Code, the national non-profit dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology, is working to reverse the decline. Last year, we reached 90,000 girls in all 50 states with the help of our free Clubs program. In this workshop, we will provide you with an interactive coding lesson, as well as more information about our Clubs programs and how to launch one in your school or district.

Content Creation Calibration for Blended Learning
Blended learning is an exciting way to personalize learning for students however, creating and calibrating content for the different blended learning models can be daunting. Blended learning has many models (i.e., station rotation, lab rotation, individual rotation, flipped classroom, flex, a la carte, or enriched virtual) and content creation for each model depends upon the purpose of the blended learning task and the learning path that the students are on.

Much of the current content being used for the various blended learning models is pre-packaged by publishers, hence, transferring those materials to a district's online learning management system can be quite time consuming and overwhelming. Hence, when creating content for the different blended learning models, the standards of learning, the instructional procedures and the students’ learning stages and learning processes are essential to the creation and calibration of content design. Creation and calibration of content considers whether one should use analog or digital tools within the design while examining best practices for streamlining online assignments with other activities.

In this session, participants will leave with a checklist for content creation and calibration plus tools for creating interactive digital handouts and interactive multimedia. Participants will also understand the steps for beta testing content with students in order to tailor their assignments for particular niches. Finally, participants will consider the future of learning and content design by surfing the digital wave of open educational resources (OERs). Hence, in this session, participants will consider how they will factor in the 5Rs of OERs (i.e., Retain, Reuse, Revise, Remix and Redistribute) for content distribution.

Deep Diving into Online Databases: Building Empathy in Our Students Using Research and Creativity
Teenagers are developmentally self-centered; they can’t help it; it’s genetically programmed into them. However, they’re also increasingly aware of the fact that there is an entire world spinning and struggling around them, thanks largely to the pervasiveness of technology today. In this session, the audience will see what it’s like when students suit up to dive into a blended study of human rights by examining seminal documents, graphic journalism, and spoken word, all culminating in a student-driven research assignment in which they create a work designed to address a current human rights issue.

Through this approach, students not only practice digital annotation and workshop skills with apps such as Google Docs and Kami, they also take charge in selecting their own mentor texts and media through individual research as well as teacher-selected playlists to meet student needs. Students make their thinking visible with mind maps and word sorts, setting individual research and writing goals along the way. They conference in workshop groups to share resources and ideas and, over time, begin to see the world as a multi-faceted one riddled not only with a wide range of needs and dilemmas, but also with a diverse body of forward-thinking problem-solvers that just so happen to be occupying the seats around them in their very classrooms.

Centered around one driving question, students are tasked with exploring multiple sides of controversial topics-- a mission both uncomfortable and rewarding for them, as it compels them to seek out common perspectives and realistic solutions as they navigate the turbulent waters of our society today.

Get Stoked - Catch the Wave with Google HyperDrawings
Learn to go new school by using Google Drawings to create an in-depth, multifaceted, student-centered lesson based around a single image. Experience how embedding hidden links into a hyperdrawing supports image analysis skills and tie in the Four C’s. Engaging directly with the components of primary sources forces students to think critically about the details that make up an image, teaching them to formulate interpretations. Geography lessons become a creative playground where students can build their own presentations that literally travel the Silk Road. You can amp up the excitement by breaking out of the barrel entirely with an escape room, requiring students to work collaboratively to solve an authentic problem. Tie in communication tools like Flipgrid and Padlet, and a single image can connect the whole class on a broader scale. While the base tool used in this lesson is Google Drawings, it can ultimately include any type of linkable resource, from Edpuzzle, to Google Forms, to further reading topics - the options are endless. Like with a hyperdoc, students are able to move at their own pace, and including periodic self-assessments help keep students on track to guide their own learning. This activity aligns with the TSIP standards for Learning Facilitator, as well as ISTE Student Standard 3c, and ISTE Teaching Standards 5b and 5c. The target audience for the presentation is Secondary level educators.

Why have students only consume when they can create? Creative uses for Google Slides
How often do students sit in class only to consume information instead of creating it? Google Slides are best known for their use as creative presentation tools but in reality, they can do much more. In this session, participants will learn how Google Slides can be used for students to create their own content and have collaborative experiences. Participants will explore a variety of examples such as collaborative slides (within and beyond the school building), choose your own adventure, stop motion, and manipulative projects. Utilizing Google Slides in this manner will both deepen understanding and provide students with new ways to demonstrate learning. A basic understanding of Google Slides is suggested.

Critical and Creative Thinking in the Blended Learning Classroom
Do you struggle in providing your students depth in their learning? Implementing critical and creative thinking strategies can allow for students to analyze, assess and reconstruct their thinking. We have found that technology and resources have enhanced our students' ability to analyze, assess and reconstruct their thinking. We want to share ways that our students have developed their critical and creative thinking skills in our blended learning classrooms so that you can do the same!

We will look at different tools and resources that teachers will be able to immediately incorporate into the classroom. Come explore and join in on an interactive guide to connect critical thinking while using technology in the blending learning classroom.

While all teachers will benefit from this session, it will be geared for teachers in grades 4 and up. we will touch on several TSIP standards, but will focus on C/T 6-8.7 Plan and apply strategies for gathering information, using a variety of tools and sources, and reflect on alternate strategies that might lead to greater successes in

Decoding the Computer Science SOLs
Virginia’s Computer Science standards become a requirement in fall 2019 - Not sure where to get started?

CodeVA's Director of Education Rebecca Dovi covers the new Virginia Computer Science SOLs. The session defines computer science and gives insight into the structure of the standards. Free resources and tools will be shared along with an overview of training available to all Virginia teachers.

Many people are surprised to discover computer science is more than just coding. It is the study of how we use computing devices to solve human problems and the new Computer Science SOLs include Networking and the Internet, Data and Analysis, Cybersecurity, Impacts of Computing, Computing Systems, and Algorithms and Programming. While this may feel overwhelming CodeVA has learned Virginia’s teachers are up to the challenge through the trainings they’ve conducted since 2014.

In 2016 Virginia became the first state in the country to mandate computer science be incorporated into instruction for all students. In fall 2017 the state Board of Education passed the new Computer Science SOLs and in spring of 2018 the VDOE set the expectation that school begin implementing by fall of 2019.

CodeVA is a Statewide nonprofit with the mission of supporting Computer Science Education for all Virginia teachers and students. Since 2014 CodeVA has trained teachers from elementary to high school in computer science education all across the Digital Dominion.

How to Train the Time Crunched Teacher
Professional development in a school setting can be tricky. I’m Right, You’re Wrong! Civil Debate in the Classroom
Do your students engage in well-reasoned, thoughtful debate with one another? Is society at large skilled in civil discussion? These are rhetorical questions because the answers are clear. Rhetoric and oratory were once vital parts of the curriculum, going all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome. Now they are often relegated to just a couple of lessons per year. This is unfortunate because employers state that the ability to communicate is one of the most important skills they look for in new hires. A powerful speech can change the world--think of Abraham Lincoln, Patrick Henry, Sojourner Truth, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Technology has made it easier to give every student a voice, and we need to train them to use those voices effectively. In this session we will share practical ways to foster civil debate in the classroom, provide real life examples, and explore web tools that facilitate teaching oracy. All our presentations can be found on this site

Moving from Boogie Boarding to Shredding the Big Waves: Using Interactive Video Assessment Tools
How can instructors measure the effectiveness of video interventions? The Inspire Loudoun Teacher Conference is a teacher-run professional learning day where Loudoun County Public Schools teachers come together to share best practices in teaching with technology. Over the past seven years, this conference has hosted over 600 teachers over a single non-contract day who exchanged ideas on collaborative practices, flipping the classroom, project and problem-based learning, Computer Science, STEM, use of 1:1 and BYOT devices for teaching and learning, and much more. In this session, we will discuss the history of this conference, the successes and the iterations that it went through when changes needed to be made; and how this can be developed in other school divisions.
  • Please view the 2018 VSTE Presentation here.
  • Please view the Inspire Loudoun 2019 website so that you can get updates for the conference on Wednesday, June 12, 2019.

Creating Behavior Plans/Goal Trackers with Google Forms
For many years, special education teachers and case managers have tracked progress on student goals and behavior plans for IEPs on paper. This presented quite a few flaws, including the student forgetting their paper, and not being able to easily and quickly analyze the collected data. Because of this, data was lost, and the teacher spent more time than needed trying to determine patterns or connections. Not anymore! In this session, learn how to use Google Forms to design a behavior plan or goal tracker for students, and then create a Google Sheet file to analyze the data. Learn what question types work best for plans, the best way to collect responses from teachers, and how to look at the collected data. Attendees will leave with plenty of resources, including a series of videos that replicates the creation of the behavior plan. With Google Forms, you'll never have to worry about students losing their behavior plan! This session meets the TSIP standard for the lifelong learner and using technology to improve pedagogy and learning.

Surf the Cross Curricular Waves of the Open Classroom Ocean
We can no longer view a school with traditional walls, classrooms, lectures, and specialized teachers but rather an open space with well-rounded and collaborative educators and students. If we model education in this way we will make learning more meaningful and prepare our students for the ACTUAL real world.

Why not design a new shoe for a solar panel installer? Have students research the role of footwear in various cultures (history), test the coefficient of friction of their shows (physics) or create a regression model (math)? Then design a fashionable yet functional shoe (art), research the production process (finance) and write a proposal letter to the company (English). Why not record an interview or commercial (media) about your shoe and create a sales pitch (public speaking) in another language (foreign language)?

Let's reimagine our schools and think about what and how we teach to better prepare our students for the real world.

Moving to Digital Literacy: Embedding Digital Tools and Multimodal Texts in Reading and Writing Workshop
With the advent of technology, teachers need to embed digital and media texts into reading and writing workshops and create several venues and opportunities to engage students to be digitally literate. This workshop will hopefully equip and expose classroom teachers, specialists and literacy coaches on the hidden instructional value of multimodal texts and in using varied digital tools and multimodal media in reading and writing workshops.

The objective of this presentation/workshop is to inspire teachers to authentically embed digital and media tools and some multimodal texts to heighten students’ interests and to help them become digitally literate in this “techy” world.

Reading & Writing Workshop Framework Model. We will briefly talk about the reading and writing workshop framework so participants can have a perspective of where anchor, mentor, and independents texts would fit in.

Using Digital and Multimodal Texts as Anchor and Mentor Texts. In this segment, we will explore some multimodal texts (songs, videos, play, advertisements, speeches, etc.) as anchor texts where teachers can draw their lessons for the next few days, just like the way we use interactive read aloud.

Teaching Reading Comprehension Skills Using Digital and Multimodal Texts. We will explore how to use some digital and multimodal texts to specifically teach some reading comprehension skills like inference, text structure, character’s motivation, etc. The author will deliberately show how to target small skills from a unit of study and based on what she observed about her students, so participants can see the importance of zooming into small skills in the focus lessons.

Embedding Digital and Media Literacy in Writing Workshops - In this segment, the focus is more on critiquing and analyzing multimodal texts. The author will model  sample multimodal texts to specifically target some writing skills like author’s craftsmanship, lead, ideas, etc.

Participants will be given a list of resources to choose from so they can create their own writing workshop focus lessons/conference lessons embedding digital literacy.

We will also explore some resources where teachers can publish their own students writing in the internet through various forms like website, blogs, Google sites and e-Books (Laird, 2015).

Surfing the Digital Wave Without Wiping Out
Let’s talk about this thing called technology that has taken over our lives and keeps us plugged in 24/7. How do we not allow it to overwhelm us?

Have you ever been on vacation and your family is calling out to you but you’re not hearing them because you’re checking work email? Do you go out to dinner, look at the table near you, and see the entire table of friends texting and checking social media with very little social interaction? Are you surfing Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat or email and the next thing you know you look up and an hour’s worth of time has gotten away from you? All of these situations can lead to unpleasant, undesirable results.

But how can we overcome that? Technology can be the Quick Silver Surfboard in surfing the digital wave, but all great surfers know you don’t want to wipe out. Come learn how to surf the digital wave without wiping out!

Should makerspaces in community-based organizations, schools and libraries coexist?
What are makerspaces? Makerspaces can take the form of places where individuals meet to share space and tools for the purpose of making things. Some makerspaces may be for-profit companies, non-profit corporations or organizations affiliated with or hosted within schools, universities or libraries (https://spaces.makerspace.com). These spaces provide opportunities for people of all ages to create, build, collaborate and learn together using no tech to high tech tools and equipment.

Some schools create makerspaces for after-school initiatives. Other schools integrate aspects of makerspaces’ design thinking and experimentation into their curriculum during the instructional day. In other school districts, electives or special classes are dedicated to creative exploration within their makerspace environments that help prepare students for fields in science, technology, engineering and math (https://www.edutopia.org/blog/creating-makerspaces-in-schools-mary-beth-hertz).

Most community-based makerspaces offer their tools as well as classes and workshops to community members of all ages for the purpose of developing knowledge and skills for designing, prototyping, and creating products. The makerspaces within these community-based environments represent the “democratization of design, engineering, fabrication, and education” (https://spaces.makerspace.com).

Makerspaces are becoming more popular for many reasons. Makerspaces provide collaborative opportunities that help participants develop design and manufacturing skills and express creativity while working with tools, materials, and equipment such as woodworking, metalworking, 3D printing, lasercutting, CNC machines, soldering irons, kilns and more. Makerspaces can also be incubators for startup businesses. For some who attended schools before the 1970’s when industrial arts was an important part of the school curriculum, it is important to create makerspaces that allow industrial learning opportunities for younger generations that do not currently have woodshop or metalworking classes in today’s schools. For retirees who downsized their homes and no longer have access to tools and equipment that they once had in their basements or garages, makerspaces become like a “club” or gathering of like-minded makers as they work together to create things. This also gives them an outlet to share their knowledge of making by teaching classes or giving hands-on workshops.

Should makerspaces in community-based organizations, schools, and libraries coexist? After all, don’t these makerspaces provide opportunities for making, collaborating, learning and sharing for all ages?

This session will provide participants with an opportunity to interact with one another to exchange ideas about forming collaborative makerspace partnerships between schools, libraries, and community-based makerspaces. Two VSTE members, one a school district makerspace educator and the other a retired educator now the education liaison for a non-profit makerspace who collaborate to establish maker initiatives that benefit schools and the community at large. They will lead the session by posing these questions for sharing and discussion:

1. In what ways do makerspaces in schools, libraries, and community-based maker organizations share the same mission, goals and objectives? How are they different?
2. What are some examples of such makerspace partnerships? What types of exchanges of ideas and resources are occurring?
3. If forming such makerspace partnerships is important to a community, what strategies and desired outcomes should be considered?

Using Technology Tools to Teach Students to Identify, Challenge, and Combat Fake News
Fake news has been described as a poison that is injected in small doses that undermines the very fundamentals of a democratic society. The most durable solution is to combat the influence of fake news is to educate students how to understand what is fake.
In the session fake news will be defined and attendees will be introduced to fact checking websites recommended by ISTE and other sources like the Poynter Institute. Websites with downloadable posters, checklists, fact-checking lesson plan sources, and videos from Stanford, KQED and Common Sense Education will be recommended. Attendees will receive access to sources stored online in a Portaportal “Fake News” portal. They will learn to use Google to do reverse image searches to verify image sources and receive preformatted Google fact-finding and fake news evaluation queries. Finally, since nearly two-thirds of students get their news through technology platforms like smartphones, the role of social media will be reviewed.

Becoming a Connected Educator Made Easy
In this globally connected world, being a connected educator is paramount. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Voxer, Snapchat, Periscope, Flipgrid, and many more platforms are emerging and evolving every day. Is it just enough to collaborate with our grade level, department, building, or district? There is a wealth of knowledge, expertise and inspiration at our fingertips if we only know where to look for it. Grab your virtual surf boards and ride the digital wave into global collaboration!
Becoming connected enables educators to reach outside the four walls of a building, beyond the professional development offered within each district, and into the globally connected world. Once connected, educators will find that there are so many more people just as passionate about all educational topics and ready to share their knowledge.
In this course, participants will learn how to choose a platform that fits their needs as an educator. Participants will learn the basics of a variety of platforms in order to tap into this wealth at their desired pace. The type of platform one chooses is personal. Participants will be able to assess the return on time invested, the easy of accessibility, and the preferred format (video, text, audio, or combination). Educators will hear the pros and cons of different platforms and learn how to optimize each. They will be able to use this information to choose a platform for their students to use as well.
We will look specifically at Voxer, Twitter, Facebook, Flipgrid, and Instagram. Participants will learn how each platform works and how to apply it for their collaboration needs for developing professional learning networks. In addition, tips will be provided on how to incorporate these same platforms with students K-12 in the classroom for communication and collaboration.
TSIP Standards addressed:
Lifelong Learner: Teachers engage in ongoing professional learning related to content, pedagogy, technology and leadership.
• Use technology to obtain feedback that allows for reflection and improvement in the learning process
• Use local and global professional learning networks to collaborate and learn in both physical and digital environments
Digital Leadership: Teachers positively contribute to and responsibly participate in the digital world.
• Cultivate and manage their digital identities and reputations and are aware of the permanence of their actions in the digital world
Learning Facilitator: Teachers facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement.
• Assist students in selecting and using appropriate and available digital tools to communicate, create, collaborate and solve problems

Future Learning with Tried and True Tech
Have you noticed we’re always trying to keep up and add new things because we feel we have to? What about sticking with what we have and trusting what is proven to work time and time again? It may not be the coolest looking or the newest invention, but at the end of the day we know it works and trust it. Ron Clark has called it, “a gift for teachers”, and his teachers have said it’s the last thing they would give up. It’s what students have said that allows them to be heard in the classroom when they would shy away from speaking before, and it’s a technology that empowers and enhances the teacher more than anything. What is it? Come hear from your peers about how using microphones in the classrooms and more has made current and future teaching and learning the most effective.

Final Thoughts & Questions

Relevance of Topic

Using Media Art as a form of assessment is very relevant at the secondary level. Students are disconnected with the assessment process because they experience so many tests. Teachers also what students to think more in-depth about the artistic process. Most students are also attached to their personal technology and would be interested in completing an assessment using that technology. If policy doesn’t allow for personal devices, most schools have enough devices to make this concept successful.

Surf into Blended Learning in the K-3 Classroom
Transform your primary classroom by surfing into blended learning. Through the use of Project Based Learning, one to one technology, G-Suite and Wixie; your students will be engaged and on their way to learning 21st century skills. During this session attendees will learn that their primary students (K-3) are never too young to begin blended learning. Attendees will learn strategies for the successful implementation of Blended Learning and Project Based Learning (PBL). They will hear about the transformation of my own first grade classroom, as well as how blending technology with PBLs has increased the engagement of all students. Attendees will be given examples of a PBL with technology blended throughout. Just as learning to surf takes practice and determination, so does the transformation of our classrooms. While things may be messy at first, persistence and growth-mindset can change what is happening in our primary classrooms. Our primary students are capable of “Surfing the Digital Wave”.

The Top 5 Web Tools You’ve Never Heard Of
If you think you’ve heard it all, then this session is for you. We had never heard of these web tools ourselves until we had some specific project demands and searched extensively online for tools that would best meet our needs. These are free tools for drawing, coding, animating, presenting, modeling, recording, and more.  They may not have the publicity of the popular apps, but are often more effective and easier to use. Some of them took hours to find, so we are eager to share them with you and save you the effort.  Each tool has been tested in real classrooms with real student projects that you will see. There are actually more than a dozen web tools we’d like to share, but you will vote on which ones you’ve never heard of, and we will focus on the top five. So you might leave with MORE than five new web tools!  Come ready to share your top unheard of web tool as well! All our presentations can be found on this site

VDOE - Blended-learning to the Rescue!
Do you feel like you’re treading water in a swirling sea of new educational buzzwords? The terms personalized learning, personalized practice, deeper learning,  Open Educational Resources (OER), competency-based education, and performance assessment have become part of our educational vernacular, but what do they mean and how what is the connection to the power of teaching and learning?  As technology leaders and classroom educators we must cipher through the trends and focus on the practices that will make the biggest difference in the classroom.  This session will focus on how you can merge various practices and utilize existing resources to navigate murky waters in order to leverage technology in ways that help us work smarter and not harder.  Come discover how blended learning can aid educators in successfully surfing the digital wave rather than simply treading the water.

How to grow your Computer Science program with a CS Club and CSHS Chapter
We all know computer science is a very important field for all students in K-12, but it can be difficult to get students into the classroom, and once students are in the class what if they want to do more than what the class might have to offer. A great way to recruit students is to have a Computer Science Club, and once you have them it is important to recognize their achievements and leadership with a Computer Science Honor Society. Computer Science club done right involves things that welcome and engage new comers to the field as well as activities, competitions and challenges to keep the experienced students engaged. The Computer Science Honor Society is a great way for students to demonstrate leadership and the community service focus of the society will help your CS program gain recognition in your school and community. The more people know about computer science the more likely it will be for students to take the course you offer. This session will share ideas for setup of both a CS Club and how to start a CSHS chapter. Success stories of existing clubs and chapters will be shared and teachers who start a CSHS will have access to everything they need to run a successful chapter as well as be able to join the network of existing CSHS advisors throughout the US.

The Computer Science Honor Society is a project of CodeVA.

The current generation, Generation Z, is crashing ashore daily as they confront huge waves of constantly changing information. Using tools such as iMovie, WeVideo, Flipgrid and Google Classroom, tech tools they may be familiar with, but they will certainly love! We will show you how to avoid the choppy waves of outdated technology, and ride the smooth waves to ignite and inspire your students’ desires to be engaged and be a partner in their learning journey. These tips and tools can help you safely reel students ashore while providing another avenue to connect with them outside of traditional means. Not to mention, if you’re big on collecting data to share with important stakeholders in your school or district about the ways in which you are able to connect and bring about change, we will share on that too! Have It Your Way: Personalizing your Professional Development
If a restaurant can make a burger your way, why can't the professional development we offer to teachers meet their strengths, interests, and needs? In this session, participants will learn how one staff is provided the opportunity to select their professional development from a playlist of options to gain magical points towards recertification. After identifying how professional development has been presented in the past, participants will be divided into smaller groups. One group will spend time viewing the Belmont Ridge Personalized PD Google site and how artifacts can be submitted and stored in the digital warehouse. The other group will discuss possible activities their staff could participate to gain PD points. After 15 minutes, the two groups will switch. We will conclude the session by asking participants to complete a 3-2-1 exit activity and allow time for question and answer. Let's make professional development exciting, meaningful, and empowering. Pack up your woody (station wagon), wax your boards (keyboards that is), and join us as we surf the wave of personalizing professional development.

Surfing Through Cause and Effect in Nonfiction Text with Ozobots
Today’s learners are engaged with technology. They are thrilled with the lights, sounds and cool moves of robots. Fill your classroom with the excitement of critical thinking and collaboration when science texts become integrated with language arts. Students are actively engaged in finding the causes and effects in the nonfiction text so they can move onto a maze for their Ozobot. The students will decide on a cause and code a path to the correct effect. Sound easy? Try it out! Participants in this session will have the opportunity to work with partners to read and identify the causes and effects in the selection. They will then use markers to color code stickers with directional codes. These codes will tell the Ozobot to turn left, turn right, or go straight. Make the Ozobot dance when it reaches the end with a back walk or zigzag code! We will also discuss how students have created their own maps to help classmates review what they have learned. Participants will also learn how to use the Ozoblockly app to code their Ozobots. This session is designed to provide a hands-on learning experience and explain how we used the technology to motivate our students.

The Power of The ISTE Standards for Educators
James Madison University ISTE Standards for Educators Certification, an ISTE Mastery Level Seal of Alignment Program, engages teachers in a deeply reflective, intensive process to align their instructional technology practices to the teacher standards set forth by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). This opportunity is for self-directed learners who are confident in their use of technology. Participants in the program develop their skills to become technology leaders at the school and district levels.
This session provides an opportunity to explain the overall scope of the program, its power in directing the use of technology in classroom instruction, and its benefits to teachers and administrators. Interested parties will leave with the following information:
• Participant options.
• Program length.
• The program formats.
• Cost, CEU’s, and graduate credit.
• Educational technology use requirements.
• Coaching and feedback.
• A successful completion of the program, what is means for the participant.
The JMU ISTE Standards for Educators Certification program has been in existence since 2002. In 2008 the change to the new Teacher Standards took place, and we are currently changing to the new Standards for Educators. Prior to 2012, the program was a Virginia school district face-to-face experience. In 2012, the program utilized a distance learning approach and extended its opportunity nationally and internationally.

Riding the Techno Wave with Digital Natives
Are you ready to ride the digital wave with your students? Jump into the water and prepare to launch a wave of excitement in your classroom. Through the creative use of digital tools, teachers are able to provide opportunities for students to create, collaborate and communicate. You might ask, “What does student creation and collaboration look like in the classroom? How can we incorporate technology into the learning process?“ Through this session, participants will discover how two elementary school teachers use tools such as Voki, Powtoons, Book Creator, Adobe Spark and Google Suite tools to amplify student creation, communication, and collaboration.

This presentation is geared towards elementary teachers of all subject areas. However, ideas can be adapted for middle or high school teachers as well. Our TSIP focus is on the learning facilitator, showing ways we use technology to personalize learning. The digital tools presented are used to foster the 4Cs: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity. Our district has implemented a fifth C: citizenship, to instill community building and relationships within the classroom as well.

Riding the Techno Wave in our classrooms is a vital component to the success of our students.
In our digital age, technology is ever-changing. As Jon Kabat-Zinn said “You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.” Our students are more excited than ever to ride the big kahunas of technology, always hungry for the next wave of tech tools they can use to show their learning. Let’s make their experience epic!

Beyond Grades - Exploring Motivation Through the Gamification Lens
As teachers, we can't settle for grades as the only way to motivate students. Revamp the game of school by learning about motivation. Catch the wave that drives students to the video gaming world. Gamification is human-focused design and educators have a lot to learn from gaming industry. We will take a deep dive with author and speaker, Yu-kai Chou. His “Octalysis” framework has helped many schools rethink their reliance on the grading structure. Each piece of the 8 sided puzzle of motivation will be filled with digital tools to encourage all students to love learning. Teachers will swim with the knowledge they can build balanced lessons to reach and inspire more students. You’ll understand why some activities don’t motivate specific students. Class VR - Making Virtual Learning a Reality in the Classroom
ClassVR is an interactive student learning system that enables teachers to deliver instruction to students in virtual, augmented, and mixed reality environments. The ClassVR system consists of two main components: student virtual reality headsets and the ClassVR Portal. ClassVR Portal is the computer application that allows teachers to discover and deliver content. Class VR Portal has a wide range of pre-prepared content selections ranging from Math to Art History and everything in between. Furthermore, ClassVR portal is the mechanism to monitor progress and deliver individualized content to specific student headsets.

Attendees will be given an overview to how we practically use the system in an urban school setting. Additionally, we will explain how teachers can easily create their own virtual reality experiences for students by using 360 captured images, downloaded images, PDFs, or by the downloading pre-made content from ClassVR Portal. In addition, we will explain how teachers can easily create their own playlist of virtual reality experiences for students. Finally, attendees will be give the opportunity to try the headset, ClassVR Portal, and brainstorm ideas with the presenters on how this program could be effectively implemented in their own school setting. We have seen that using ClassVR raised student engagement and increased knowledge retention in our school.

Future Learning with Tried and True Tech
"Have you noticed we’re always trying to keep up and add new things because we feel we have to? What about sticking with what we have and trusting what is proven to work time and time again? It may not be the coolest looking or the newest invention, but at the end of the day we know it works and trust it. Ron Clark has called it, “a gift for teachers”, and his teachers have said it’s the last thing they would give up. It’s what students have said that allows them to be heard in the classroom when they would shy away from speaking before, and it’s a technology that empowers and enhances the teacher more than anything. What is it? Come hear from your peers about how using microphones in the classrooms and more has made current and future teaching and learning the most effective.

Jump in the Podcast Pool! The water is fine!
Podcasts are quickly becoming the wave of the future even though they are rooted in a medium from the past. Roosevelt's "Fireside Chats" allowed a nation to feel as though the president was speaking directly to them; today, people listen to something like Serial's "This American Life" to make personal connections with the speakers and the stories being told. Others listen to podcasts that debate topics, discuss current (or historical events), and explore the unexplained. The art of sharing stories and conveying ideas draws the audience closer to the speaker, and creating a podcast allows the speaker to creatively build collaboration, communication, and critical thinking skills while practicing digital citizenship. This session will show you how to craft a lesson to help students create and share their own podcasts using available recording devices and Padlet. It will touch on developing the criteria for the assignment as well as real world applications for collaboration, creativity, communication, critical thinking, and citizenship.

Learning to Swim: Building a Student Tech Team with a Laptop Lending Library
Not all students have their own devices, so we can't depend on a BYOD program if we want students working consistently with technology. However, not all schools can afford to provide a device for every student. We need to find alternatives. Fortunately, a generous company gave us their old, wiped laptops when they upgraded. YEAH! Our district won't add donated devices to their management system. BOOO!

BUT, we also should be teaching our students to troubleshoot their devices. This gave us an excellent opportunity to create a student tech team that could troubleshoot problems, because they understood how the computers worked. Now we have 45 laptops for students to check out: some with specialized programs for math, science or substitutes, others with just the basics, all with protection to ensure that student information is wiped between each user. We also have a set of students with the skills to help their teachers and colleagues in class.

Learn from our experience how to set up a successful laptop lending library from scratch, along with a student tech team to keep them in good repair.

Hyped Up on Hyperdocs! (and Other Tools for Collaboration)
In this session, participants will experience, first-hand, an instructor-created hyperdoc, a teaching strategy that provides students with a completely "packaged" learning experience that allow teachers to move from a "sage on the stage" to a facilitator role, meeting the diverse needs of their students while helping them obtain digital citizenship skills.  By taking advantage of the many collaborative features available through the G-Suite as well as other Web 2.0 resources, hyperdocs are also ideal for encouraging collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.

This session will show the basic format of a hyperdoc while spotlighting useful web tools (including, but not limited, to Flipgrid, Peardeck, Keep, Edpuzzle, add-ons, booksnaps, choice boards, meme generators) and sharing examples from many content areas. This session will encourage teachers to take the first step in “flipping” their classroom, give them ideas of how to collaborate with other professionals on hyperdoc lessons, and provide them with resources to support hyperdoc creation.

Participants will leave this session with:
-Understanding of hyperdocs as a teaching tool
-Experience with using a hyperdoc from the student perspective
-Knowledge of Chrome extensions, Google add-ons, and Web 2.0 resources that are effective in the hyperdoc environment
-Understanding of how hyperdocs can aid in differentiating instruction and easing classroom management
-Proficiency navigating existing hyperdoc libraries and template galleries

Implementing 5C's through a Learning Management System
With equity at the center of educational practices, educators are under increased pressure to provide highly engaging and differentiated instruction to all students.
Learning Management Systems, whether it be Schoology, Google Classroom, or even a simply interactive documents, can play a powerful role in supporting the implementation of the 5C's . In this session we will discuss designing lessons that encourage the students to do the "heavy lifting" and are based in inquiry, interest, and encourage critical thinking. I will provide examples, for teachers and coaches, using a variety of learning management systems to demonstrate the workflow for both teachers and students.
We are going to look at the idea of blended learning that offers students both face to face and online learning opportunities. With a learning management system we are able to be proactive in designing lessons that allow students to develop, and grow, student equity. The aim for teachers will be to support students, plan personal pathways, and to develop a positive growth mindset regardless of the tool, LMS in this case, chosen. Our goal will be to use technology for deeper learning!

Point BreakoutEdu: Designing Breakout or Escape Room Challenges for ALL Students
Breakout or escape room challenges are powerful tools for student engagement often made easier to access using digital tools. Online searches for templates or samples of these activities can yield wonderful resources and ideas, but often teachers desire to modify them to make them accessible to their student’s unique learning needs. This can be a roadblock for moving forward.

This session will focus specifically on the design process for a breakout or escape room activity using digital tools. After a brief introduction, a workshop will be facilitated and participants will be provided with resources and one-on-one support for planning and developing these challenges. Participants will be given the choice to work in groups or individually. One facilitator has a background in advanced academics and the other has a background in special education. In addition, participants will be provided with many resources to support getting started, including some ideas and take-aways for having students create their own breakout or escape room activity. Google tools will be used to support this work.

(To keep with the conference theme, this session will also include many references to the movie, Point Break!)

Teaching Kids to Code Using PBS KIDS ScratchJr – Preparing Our Students for the Future
Have you been asked to teach your Kindergarten-Second Grade students (ages 5-8) coding and have no idea where to start? PBS Kids ScratchJr is one option for you. It is a free app developed in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab, Tufts University's Developmental Technologies Research Group, and PBS KIDS, that can be installed on your Android Tablet or your Apple iPad. As kids snap together colorful programming blocks to make their favorite PBS KIDS characters move, jump, dance and sing, they will learn to solve problems, design projects and express themselves creatively with technology. The training will introduce you to developmentally appropriate coding and computational thinking concepts and practices through the use of the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app.

You will gain experience using the tool and will explore a curriculum designed for informal learning environments that helps support children through the creative design process by providing opportunities to imagine, explore, plan, create, and share their creativity and use of the media and technology.

This is a BYOD event. Please come with the PBS KIDS ScratchJr app loaded on your Android tablet, iPad, or Amazon Tablet. We will have some loaner iPads at the training. NOTE: ScratchJr is available on Chromebooks. ScratchJr is the same as PBS Kids ScratchJr, but does not include the PBS characters. http://pbskids.org/scratchjr

Khan Academy: Not Just Math Videos Anymore
We want to show people that while Khan Academy is still an outstanding resource for math teachers and students, there is much more to the site now. Their recent partnership with College Board has made the site an excellent destination for teachers/students of AP classes and for test prep. The site also has excellent resources for ESL learners. Not only are the videos able to closed-captioned in multiple languages, but the entire site can be changed to match the language that a learner might need. The ability for teachers to remediate, extend/enrich, scaffold, or just review is making the site an invaluable resource for teachers. Also, for those inclined, the data that is available from the teacher view as it relates to objectives and mastery has made the site a big part of special education teachers’ classes.

Using Google Sites to deliver Rad Virtual PD
When creating virtual PD, either standalone or as part of a Blended Lesson, why complicate matters? The new Google Sites is a simple, easy way to package videos, Padlets, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms, Flipgrids and more into a seamless Hyperdoc of sorts, but without a lot of open tabs in the browser. Creation is a breeze for the developer and navigation is smooth for the user. View various examples of epic virtual PD Google Sites and get started on a righteous site of your own in this session. This method of creating PD could also be used for teachers to package lessons for the classroom.
